Summer 2011 TBA Newsletter

June 16, 2011

Hello Fellow Thunder Beachers! Given the past few weeks of grey and gloom, as well as below average seasonal temperatures, there was no shortage of traffic heading up north to cottage country for the start of the Victoria long weekend. Despite the weather, the beach was bustling with activity; boats being launched; gardening and cleanup around the cottage; the tennis courts back in full swing; and even a few swimmers taking the plunge in to the cold and frigid waters of the Bay. All positive signs that the spirit of Thunder Beach is alive and well! In terms of beach updates, our online membership continues to grow. We encourage people to keep visiting our website to keep informed and up-to-date on information, news and events in and around the beach. It is never too late to go online and register. EXECUTIVE MEMBERS NEEDED: The Executive is looking to recruit some new members. Show your stewardship and come and join a fun group! What position would interest you? Please contact us through the website. THUNDER BEACH ART SHOW: Back by popular demand … the Thunder Beach Art Show! SAFE BOATING: At the AGM last year, members expressed serious concerns about the boating traffic, lack of spotters for water-skiing and tubing activities, as well as the increased boat speed inside the marked swimming buoys. Please be reminded of the following rules:
  • All operators of powerboats must have proof of a Pleasure Craft Operator Card;
  • Minimum age for operating a personal watercraft is 16 years of age;
  • Life jackets must be worn at all times;
  • Inside the swimming buoys is a “ZERO WAKE/SLOW ZONE”. Be on the lookout for swimmers.
Please make this a fun and safe boating season. DOGS: Be a responsible pet owner and remember:
  • dogs on the beach must be on a leash; and
  • please don't forget to stoop and scoop.
I look forward to another great summer and serving as your President. Kindest regards,

David Northcott

To Trudy Richard for her continuous support! Thanks to Susan Winter for organizing the annual tailgate party and all the parents who so generously donated food/beverages for ALL! The Wishard Spence Award

By Beth Hardcastle The Wishard Spence Award is given to recognize to a member the community who has shown an outstanding support and commitment to the association. Gail Moss Bradley was honoured this year for her years of devotion to the social aspects of the association. In the social director position of the executive committee for many years, she worked tirelessly coming up with new and different ways to engage the community with the social activities, was it Gail who initiated the Lobster Fest dinner. Gail undertook each these events personally, in the early years these events were not catered which meant an incredible amount of personal time was dedicated to the success of each and every event. Gail worked with endless amounts of enthusiasm and truly enjoyed the opportunity to initiate a social foundation on which the beach and it members will always enjoy. I was honoured to give this award to Gail, I had the opportunity to work with her for many years and yes I am still cooking the lobsters!!!She was a great beach advocate and a great friend of mine. Sadly Gail lost her battle to cancer early last summer, Gail’s daughter Tiffany received on her behalf.

Sympathies

HARRIS, Robert Died Feb 3, 2011 in Burnaby, BC with his family at his side. Robert was married to lifelong Thunder Beacher, Colleen Cameron Harris. He was admired for his many practical talents (as much as his practical jokes – who knew pigs could fly?) & will be remembered for his kindness, generosity of spirit and sense of fun, particularly at his favourite place, Thunder Bay Beach. Robert and Colleen would drive from BC each summer and stay until they had squeezed out the last of the warm weather. He was a man of many talents, to name a few: ‘Drop In’ Enthusiast (and ad hoc court handyman), Thunder Highlands Keener (keenest in the lost ball hunt, that is), An Original ‘Upcycler’ (read: trash into treasure) and last but not least, his legacy, Creator of the Thunder Beach Scrabble Tournament (king and master of the two letter word). Robert’s name would magically appear on the trophy year after year, though he hadn’t always won. His memory will always invoke a smile. Our condolences to his dear ‘colleen’ and extended family: nephew Jeff Martin (Jane) and their daughters, Jenny, Samantha and Alex; niece Leslie Smellie (Gord) and their sons Cam and Jamie; nephew Gary Martin (Pat) and their sons, Greg and Brad. Robert will be dearly missed as well by family in UK, US and Canada. In honour of Robert, tell a joke, play a round of golf, repair a ‘find’, ‘drop in’ to a tennis game, enjoy Scrabble on the beach, and please, turn up the Johnny Cash tunes.
